India

In June 2009, I had the opportunity to go to India to spend some time with street children and ex-pats. I picked up a few words of Hindi as I planned and carried out activities with the kids. In the time I had with these children I was able to encourage them and help them know that they belong, not only in their community, but in the world.
I also got to experience the incredible hospitality that the people of India are so famous for. I saw people selflessly helping others out and market guards occasionally taking the time to make the street kids smile.
This initial experience in India led me to spend lots of time over the following four years in and out of India volunteering in rural settings to help disadvantaged children have access to competitive educational facilities. I spent time with one school in particular and was able to help the administrative team develop learning opportunities for the school's teachers and music and arts programs for the students.
